WAH WAH WATSON - ELEMENTARY LP 76

When I was recording this one I knew it was an important release for 1976 because of who was involved (I have restored links at start of posts today shown) with The Waters Family, Joe Sample, The Brothers Johnson and Ray Parker, Jr.  Now Discogs also has a reason {WOW-WAH!} per:  Melvin "Wah Wah" Watson

Real Name:  Melvin M. Ragin

Profile:  American soul/funk guitarist, songwriter and producer.

Born: December 8, 1950 in Richmond, VA - died: October 24, 2018 in Santa Monica, CA (age 67)

He worked as a top session musician for artists such as Michael Jackson (Off The Wall), Marvin Gaye (Let's Get It On), Herbie Hancock (Man-Child), and Quincy Jones (Body Heat), among others.

He joined the Motown house band, The Funk Brothers, in 1968 and later played on one of The Temptations’ most iconic singles 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone'.

WALT MILLS - EXPRESSIONS LP 77

Can't step away from the Jesus Music subgenre too long as I may miss a 'top 10' kind of release in the genre like this one as it sounds very pleasing.

VA - VIACOMCMD RADIO MIX KMOJ FUNDAMENTALS LISTENING TAPE

O.K. then I mentioned last week in the Anita Baker post that my favorite R&B years in evolution was the stone groove like on this tape.  Thinking about it later, she was leaning this way but was more like the MF Doom samples of R & B with the rising ambient sustain in a couple of tunes.  Side one of this tape I recorded one Friday in college after going out to a bar gig I'm sure as I do remember being buzzed and turned on KMOJ and the Mellow Fellow was spinnin' these type of hits and the people that were calling at that hour that he put on the radio were absolutely in their highest state--many at parties going on.  Anyways I think I labeled it so generically 'Fundamentals Listening Tape" because me mind was blown and it was time to catch up with my music studies!  Had no idea these kind of outwardly crafted tunes were a further evolution of R&B akin to stoner rock.  Some of these lyrics stayed in my head all these years like Paul Lawrence's track 'Cut The Crap" with for example the spoken part I've used many times, "I've already been raised once by my mama and she did a hell of a job--know what I'm sayin'?" or "I get the first degree murder joint".  Some I didn't know who sang like 'Are You Single?" which my Sunday night in college KMOJ DJ Chilly Charles would play a lot on his classic 'Back In The Days Of Soul" radio show.  I guess the Mellow Fellow who was over the top on these song eventually moved out to L.A. to make it big I presume as Friday night was a tough one for me to make for a regular listen back then.  I have a couple more tapes I will post in time-oh yeah last time I posted a straight radio show recording, someone had asked if I can leave the tape uncut so I did this as an alternative which makes the songs file bigger with two copies but you also get side 1 & 2 complete.  Side 2 has some newer state of the state alt. tracks as well which kind of fits the new styles.  Includes:  Smokey Robinson & Rick James, Keith Sweat, Full Force (killer mellow medley smoove stylee!), Too Short, Eddie Kendricks, Led Zeppelin (I filled in at the end with my fave tune by them), Jan Hammer, Bootsy Collins (I think, it's a KMOJ 'Dusty" so you get that...maybe called Dugie Stick?), The House Of Love, Mike Hudson (from Pagans), Summer High track to go with above sampler. "Silver heels!"

ELSA LANCHESTER - MORE BAWDY COCKNEY SONGS, VOL. II LP

I was surprised there would be a 'cockney' titled vinyl that was from the U.S.A. and not U.K.  At any rate found this at Goodwill long ago and really dug the street knowledge she conveys with very unique stylings.  Just a start with this artist.  Enjoy!

MILLER & EATON - LOVE IS A LIVING THING... LP 84

This private press is not over at Discogs and I found it at Goodwill.  It is a keeper for me as I dig loud singing and lounge axe like this do it for me ala Brian French and specific crooners. Top notch!

The World's Greatest Old-Time Radio Shows #59 - Have Gun, Will Travel 2 shows

Continuing on with this cassette series from Goodwill we have one of my favorite genre's with a Western TV Show.  The two shows are:  Comanche [07-05-59] & That Was No Lady [02-21-60].

ROGER WHITTAKER - The Best Of LP 77 w The Last Farewell and Other Hits LP 75 w All My Best TV 2LP 77 w Reflections of Love cassette 76 w Reader's Digest Best of 2 of 3 cassettes 83 w Best Loved Ballads tape 86

REPOST and ADD ON:  Got thrown a curve ball from Goodwill as I found Roger's later Ballads cassette in incorrect tape box.  And just when I had finally purged this Goodwill collection from my loins but that's O.K. since the Ballads tape really doesn't sound at all like his earlier work and is actually quite good and fits with ultimate R&B evolution posts this week.  Enjoy!

Christopher - What'cha Gonna Do? CD 69 w st CD -cc

COLLECTOR'S CHOICE:  Per Discogs:  Acid / Psychedelic Rock band from South Carolina, USA.

In 1969, they recorded their first, and only LP, What'cha Gonna Do?, and released it in limited quantities (with only around 100 being known to exist).

What'cha Gonna Do? is a surprisingly good, and well rounded LP, blending Acid Rock, Blues, and Trippy lyrics, making it a unique experience.

The album has been reissued several times, including a deluxe edition by Lion Productions with expanded liner notes and rare photos.

Original pressings have sold for thousands of dollars due to their rarity and quality

Christmas - Christmas CD 70 -cc

COLLECTOR'S CHOICE:  Per Discogs:  Canadian heavy psychedelic group from Oshawa, Ontario, formed in 1969 and active until mid-70s.

After two albums both issued in 1970, around 1973 they decided to made a slight adjustment to their name to become THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS also releasing in 1974 a new album called "Lies to Live By". At this point the band veered towards a more folk and progressive sound without forgetting their roots in hard rock. In 1975 the band disbanded.

THE FABULOUS FLIPPERS - SOMETHING TANGIBLE LP 70

These guys are all panache, another one of those bands doing only the best of cover songs.  It lists a thank you to famous Sound 80 Studio in my home town that I mentioned in the past at the blog.  Here is what discogs says:  Probably no other single musical group had such an impact on the music of Mid America in the 60s as The Fabulous Flippers. They were the lead act in the legendary Mid-Continent Productions booking agency owned by John Brown and Mike Murfin. Throughout the Flipper's career, they recorded eight singles, one LP and one EP. They are best remembered for their release on Chicago's Cameo-Parkway Records "Harlem Shuffle/I Don't Want To Cry".

VA - VIACOMCMD FROM FRIENDS - PURE CHEMICAL tape

"Ah yes indeed it's fun time!" as the rap sample goes.  This time the mix is from my buddy Joe who is a photojournalist for TV news in MN and we met in 7th grade when our grade schools merged into the Junior High.  By nineth grade our whole class was into these type of bands and by the time we were hanging out in Lake Harriet neighborhood, Joe had a house on Brookside Ave. and brought me a flyer for the house I ended up buying right across the street from him.  This we early nineties and like last post in this series (from my buddy Fred), they both had developed a great new CD collection while I was hanging on for dear life buying only vinyl (albeit I had turned them both onto some of these bands but we all went to shows-in fact the live Descendents track is from their album that I was on the cover shot for it and fIREHOSE filmed the 'Walking The Dog' video at First Ave I was at the show).  I love all these songs and I know you will too!  Includes previously mentioned along with:  Minutemen, Meat Puppets (yes, Sam again like on Fred's tape LOL), Doug Sahm & Sons (we were all 13th Floor Elevator initiates as near our hood, Joe knew the high school art teacher's older son who lived in the basement and would float to Joe key CD's from Alex Chilton "stuff", Roky Erickson solo and the Thirteenth Floor Elevators and the 'Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye' tribute CD had just came out and we all dug it with a couple songs on this mix), Soundgarden (we were "feelin' Minnesotan" LOL--not on mix), X (Joe was a huge X fan who turned me onto them and his sister who was my eldest sister's age (and also early First Ave regulars got John and Exene's autograph on a mom & pop restaurant paper placemat when she bumped into them there), Fishbone (my second show 'Bone In the USA tour--I was a fanatic and turned them on to the band), Butthole Surfers (yep included just like Fred put on last mix and I did as well), Page & Plant, Husker Du, The Soft Boys (Fred's contribution introduced to us by him), fIREHOSE, Dread Zeppelin (Joe filmed their First Ave gig for his TV news as well as NOVA MOB in the Entry which I have posted), Red Hot Chili Peppers, Replacements, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Stone Roses (I still remember when the three of us went to another close friends cabin one weekend to ride his 3-wheeler through a dunes big bump trail in the backyard but which was made illegal but remember that refrigerator full of beer only and when we turned on the TV, soon the Stone Roses new video for 'Fools Gold' was shown and I was very excited having just bought it!), Beastie Boys and John Wesley Harding & The Good Liars.
